Youthful folly. Success. It is not I who seeks the young fool; the young fool seeks me. On the first consultation I answer; repeated questioning is disrespect. Disrespect gets no answer. Perseverance brings reward.
蒙，亨。匪我求童蒙，童蒙求我。初筮告，再三瀆，瀆則不告。利貞。
Commentary on the Judgment · 彖传
Youthful Folly. Below the mountain lies danger; stopping at danger is folly. Folly succeeds when action is timely and centered. It is not I who seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me; our intentions respond. At the first consultation I give guidance because the strong is centered. Repeated questioning is disrespectful; disrespect brings no guidance. Folly, when used to cultivate correctness, is the work of a sage.
蒙，山下有險，險而止，蒙。蒙亨，以亨行時中也。匪我求童蒙，童蒙求我，志應也。初筮告，以剛中也。再三瀆，瀆則不告，瀆蒙也。蒙以養正，聖功也。

Enlightening the ignorant. Removing shackles. Going forward brings regret.
發蒙，利用刑人，用說桎梏，以往吝。
Using punishment on people is beneficial; to correct the law.
利用刑人，以正法也。
Embracing the ignorant brings fortune. Taking a wife brings fortune. The son manages the household.
包蒙吉，納婦吉，子克家。
The son manages the family; firm and yielding connect.
子克家，剛柔接也。
Do not take this woman. Seeing a wealthy man, she loses herself. Nothing favorable.
勿用取女，見金夫，不有躬，无攸利。
Do not take a woman; the course is not orderly.
勿用取女，行不順也。
Confined by ignorance. Regret.
困蒙，吝。
The isolated ignorance keeps it far from substance.
困蒙之獨，遠實也。
Childlike ignorance. Fortune.
童蒙，吉。
The youthful ignorance brings good fortune through compliance and humility.
童蒙之吉，順以巽也。
Striking the ignorant. Not favorable to be the aggressor, favorable to resist aggression.
擊蒙，不利為寇，利禦寇。
Favorable for fending off invaders, as upper and lower are in accord.
利用御寇，上下順也。
