Conflict. Sincerity blocked, be wary. Midway good fortune, ending misfortune. Favorable to see the great person. Not favorable to cross great waters.
訟，有孚窒惕，中吉，終凶。利見大人，不利涉大川。
Commentary on the Judgment · 彖传
Conflict. Upper strength, lower danger. Danger and strength: conflict. Conflict with sincerity blocked, cautious midpoint brings good fortune. Strength arrives and gains the center. Ending in misfortune: conflict cannot succeed. Advantage to see the great person: they value centered correctness. Disadvantage to cross the great river: entering the abyss.
訟，上剛下險，險而健，訟。訟有孚窒惕中吉，剛來而得中也。終凶，訟不可成也。利見大人，尚中正也。不利涉大川，入于淵也。

Not prolonging the matter. Some words, but fortune in the end.
不永所事，小有言，終吉。
Do not prolong the matter; disputes cannot last. Though small criticisms arise, the truth is clear.
不永所事，訟不可長也。雖有小言，其辨明也。
Cannot win the conflict. Retreat. No harm comes to your people.
不克訟，歸而逋，其邑人三百戶，无眚。
Unable to win the case, one retreats and hides. Suing from below against those above invites disaster.
不克訟，歸逋竄也。自下訟上，患至掇也。
Living on past virtue. Perseverance through danger brings fortune.
食舊德，貞厲，終吉。或從王事，无成。
Reap from past virtue; following the leader is fortunate.
食舊德，從上吉也。
Cannot win the conflict. Turn back to your destiny. Change brings peace.
不克訟，復即命，渝安貞，吉。
Return to the order and change; steadfastness in peace ensures no loss.
復即命渝，安貞不失也。
The conflict — supreme fortune.
訟，元吉。
The lawsuit has supreme good fortune because of centrality and uprightness.
訟元吉，以中正也。
Being awarded a ceremonial belt, but it is taken away three times before noon.
或錫之鞶帶，終朝三褫之。
Gaining rank through conflict is not worthy of respect.
以訟受服，亦不足敬也。
