明夷,利艱貞。

Light enters the earth: wounding of the light. The wise person governs the multitude by using darkness and yet being bright.
明入地中,明夷。君子以蒞眾用晦而明。

Darkened light in flight, drooping wings. The noble one travels three days without eating. Having a place to go, the host has bitter words.
明夷于飛,垂其翼。君子于行,三日不食。有攸往,主人有言。
The wise person on the move, righteousness means not eating.
君子于行,義不食也。
Line 2
Darkened light, wounded in the left thigh — rescue with a strong horse brings good fortune.
明夷,夷于左股,用拯馬壯吉。
The good fortune of second yin, compliant and following the pattern.
六二之吉,順以則也。

Darkened light on the southern hunt — taking the great head. Do not press for quick results.
明夷于南狩,得其大首,不可疾貞。
The intent to hunt south, then great gain.
南狩之志,乃大得也。

Entering the left belly, grasping the heart of the darkness — then out through the gate.
入于左腹,獲明夷之心,于出門庭。
Entering the left belly, obtaining the heart's intent.
入于左腹,獲心意也。

The darkened light of Jizi — favorable to persevere.
箕子之明夷,利貞。
The constancy of the Prince of Ji; the light cannot be extinguished.
箕子之貞,明不可息也。

Not light but darkness — first rising to heaven, then plunging into the earth.
不明晦,初登于天,後入于地。
First ascending to heaven, shining on the four lands. Later entering the earth, losing the pattern.
初登于天,照四國也。後入于地,失則也。
