Retreat succeeds. By retreating, one achieves success.
遯亨,遯而亨也。

Last in the retreat — danger. Do not set out anywhere.
遁尾厲,勿用有攸往。
The danger of being at the tail of retreat: if you do not go, what disaster?
遁尾之厲,不往何灾也。
Bound fast with yellow oxhide — no one can loosen it.
執之用黃牛之革,莫之胜說。
Binding with yellow oxhide: this strengthens the resolve.
執用黃牛,固志也。
Entangled retreat — illness and danger. Tending those close to home brings good fortune.
繫遁有疾厲,畜臣妾吉。
The danger of being tied to retreat: illness and exhaustion. Keeping servants is auspicious: cannot handle great affairs.
繫遁之厲,有疾惫也。畜臣妾吉,不可大事也。
Willing retreat — good fortune for the noble one; the small person fails.
好遁,君子吉,小人否。
The wise person enjoys retreat; the petty person does not.
君子好遁,小人否也。
Gracious retreat — perseverance brings good fortune.
嘉遁貞吉。
A commendable retreat: perseverance brings good fortune, for the intention is correct.
嘉遁貞吉,以正志也。
Rich, untroubled retreat. Nothing unfavorable.
肥遁,无不利。
A smooth retreat: nothing unfavorable, because there is no doubt.
肥遁无不利,无所疑也。
