Judgment · 卦辞
The Well. Changing towns does not change the well. No loss, no gain.
井,改邑不改井。无喪无得。
Commentary on the Judgment · 彖传
The well: wood goes into water and brings water up.
井,巽乎水而上水。

木上有水,井。君子以勞民勸相。

The well is muddy, not drunk from. No creatures come to the old well.
井泥不食,舊井无禽。
Muddy well, not drunk from, because it is low. Old well, no animals, because it is abandoned.
井泥不食,下也。旧井无禽,时舍也。

At the well's depth, an arrow shot at minnows. The jar is cracked and leaks.
井谷射鲋,瓮敝漏。
The well's hole shoots at fish, because there is no one to share with.
井谷射鲋,无与也。

The well is cleaned yet not drunk from — my heart aches. It can be drawn; if the king were clear-minded, all would share the blessing.
井渫不食,为我心惻。可用汲,王明并受其福。
The well is cleaned but not drunk from; this moves people to pity. Seek an enlightened ruler to receive blessing.
井渫不食,行恻也。求王明,受福也。
Line 4
The well is being relined. No blame.
井甃无咎。
The well is lined without fault, because it is being repaired.
井甃无咎,修井也。
Line 5
The well is clear, a cold spring — drink from it.
井冽寒泉食。
Cold spring water drunk from, because it is centered and correct.
寒泉之食,中正也。
Line 6
The well is drawn; do not cover it. Sincerity — supreme good fortune.
井收勿幕有孚元吉。
Supreme good fortune at the top, because great achievement is complete.
元吉在上,大成也。
